FACT OF THE DAY: The first sound recording device was the phonautograph, patented by French inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville in 1857, twenty years before Thomas Edison’s phonograph. The device recorded Scott’s voice onto soot-covered paper, but never achieved prominence because he had no way to play back the sound. In 2008, audio historians digitally scanned the paper and were able to recreate the sounds that Scott recorded over 150 years ago.
