FACT OF THE DAY: On this day in 1908, an asteroid or comet exploded several miles over Russian Siberia and leveled an area of forest 16 miles across (approximately 2,000 square kilometers), killing some 80 million trees. The explosion equalled 3-5 megatons of TNT, more powerful than the largest nuclear bomb in service. Due to its remote location, the event was only witnessed by a few, and caused no human casualties. June 30 is now known as Asteroid Day.
