FACT OF THE DAY: The Australian tectonic plate is the fastest-moving on earth, shifting northward by about 2.7 inches per year. As a result, Australia needs to occasionally update its own coordinates so that GPS systems remain accurate—for the last adjustment in 1994, every coordinate was shifted by 656 feet. More accurate GPS systems in the future will make this problem greater.
