FACT OF THE DAY: On October 17, 1814—two hundred years ago today—a 135,000-gallon beer vat ruptured at the Meux & Company Brewery in London, breaking other vats in the process and spilling over 323,000 gallons of beer. The flood of beer rushed through nearby streets, destroyed two homes, and killed eight people.
