FACT OF THE DAY: The famous “panic” that accompanied Orson Welles’ 1938 broadcast of “War of the Worlds” is now thought to be a fabrication. Newspapers and magazines published reports of heart attacks, suicides, and riots, but no such reports have ever been substantiated. It’s possible that print media outlets were trying to frame the new medium of radio as dangerous and irresponsible.
