FACT OF THE DAY: The Pharos of Alexandria, built between 280 and 247 BCE, was a limestone lighthouse that stood at least 120 meters tall, the tallest non-pyramid building in the world. The flame at the top was visible at least 30 miles out to sea. The lighthouse stood intact for over 1,200 years until being badly damaged in an earthquake in 956.
