FACT OF THE DAY: In addition to not wearing white after Labor Day, another fashion tradition around the turn of the 20th century was not to wear straw hats after September 15. On September 13, 1922—a couple of days early—some gang members from the infamous Five Points area of New York City began snatching and destroying straw hats off the heads of local men. Additional violence ensued, and the so-called Straw Hat Riots lasted for an additional two days.
