FACT OF THE DAY: The world’s longest painting is the 1848 canvas “Purrington-Russell Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage Round the World,” a work 8 1/2 feet high and 1,275 feet long. The painting is stored on large spools and designed to be displayed as a moving scroll. It hasn’t been on view in over 50 years but its owner, the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts, is restoring it for a 2018 unveiling.
