FACT OF THE DAY: On August 26 and 27, 1883, the Indonesian island of Krakatoa suffered a series of volcanic explosions that collapsed the entire island into the sea. The largest explosion, at 10:02am on the 27th, is believed to be the loudest sound in human history; it was heard on the island of Rodrigues almost 3,000 miles away, and recorded on pressure barometers around the world. Krakatoa’s eruption killed at least 36,000 local residents and produced bright red sunsets around the world for months afterward.
