FACT OF THE DAY: Actor James Doohan, who played Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott on Star Trek, was a part of the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944. Doohan, a lieutenant in the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, killed two German snipers on the first day of the invasion. That same night, Doohan was shot six times by a Canadian sentry who mistook him for a German—four times in the leg, once through his middle finger, and once in the chest. The bullet to his chest was stopped by a cigarette case. Doohan concealed his missing middle finger throughout his acting career.
