FACT OF THE DAY: James Barry, born Margaret Ann Bulkley, was possibly the first transgender man to complete medical school, doing so in 1813. Barry proceeded to have a 50-year career in medicine, rising to Inspector General of Canada and endorsing progressive medicinal principles. Among his exploits, Barry performed the first successful Caesarean section in Africa in 1866; the child, named James Barry Munnik, later became prime minister of South Africa. Barry’s birth gender was never publicly known.
