FACT OF THE DAY: Some indigenous Australians navigate the Outback using “songlines,” ritualistic songs whose lyrics describe landmarks and other features, and whose melody often matches the contours of the land being traversed. Songlines sometimes contain lyrics in multiple languages, matching the languages of the area being crossed, and are written for travel in a certain direction; it may be considered sacrilegious to travel a songline in the opposite direction.
