FACT OF THE DAY: In 2010, workers building the new World Trade Center discovered remnants of a 60-foot-long merchant ship buried 30 feet below street level. The ship was constructed sometime in the 1770s, transported goods to and from the Caribbean, and was eventually added to the landfill that extended lower Manhattan westward in the late 18th century.
