FACT OF THE DAY: The ancient Roman calendar was 355 days long, 10 days less than the solar year. Rome’s high priest, the Pontifex Maximus, would occasionally correct for this problem by adding an “intercalary month” of up to 22 days, but this power was used politically to artificially shorten or lengthen the terms of Roman magistrates. As a result, the calendar fell widely out of sync with the seasons until Julius Caesar created the Julian calendar and leap days. To allow for this final correction, the preceding year—46 BC—was 445 days long.
