FACT OF THE DAY: For eight months between 1783 and 1784, the Laki fissure in southern Iceland emitted clouds of hydrofluoric acid and sulfur dioxide which killed over 50% of the island’s livestock and led to a famine that killed 25% of the population. The eruption also disrupted crops around the Northern Hemisphere and may have led to the death of as many as six million people worldwide.
