FACT OF THE DAY: On July 4, 1885, at the laying of the cornerstone for the Driskill Hotel, Austinite Edward Shands delivered a speech where he predicted what Austin would be like on July 4, 2000. Among his predictions: Austin would have a population of 75,000, mail would be delivered to homes via “electrical airships,” and passengers could take “modern aerial flights” from Austin all around the world. (Austin’s actual population in 2000 was 656,000.)
