FACT OF THE DAY: In April 1875, a swam of locusts numbering in the trillions appeared in the Midwest and devastated the agriculture over much of Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, and neighboring states. The swarm took as many as five days to pass over a single location, darkening the sky as they did. The locusts even impeded rail travel, as the oil from their crushed bodies reduced the traction so as to actually stop the train.
