FACT OF THE DAY: On May 7, 1915—one hundred years ago today—the German submarine U-20 sank the RMS Lusitania, killing 1,191 of the 1,962 souls onboard and inciting American public opinion in favor of joining World War I. The Lusitania was 787 feet long and sank in only 305 feet of water, with its bow striking the sea floor while the stern was still in the air.
