FACT OF THE DAY: In 1803, a ship crossed from Spain to America to deliver the first smallpox vaccine. Since the vaccine is a live virus which the body eradicates in a few days, the delivery was achieved by filling the boat with 22 orphan boys, one of whom had the virus. The orphans transmitted the virus amongst themselves during the voyage, ensuring that upon arrival, at least one would still be sick upon arrival.
