FACT OF THE DAY: President William McKinley always wore a red carnation on his lapel which was considered to be his good-luck charm. On September 6, 1901 at the Pan-American Exposition, 12-year-old Myrtle Ledger asked McKinley if she could have it. He complied, and was shot to death seconds later.
