FACT OF THE DAY: In the late 1800s, a railroad worker named James Wide was rendered paraplegic in an accident at the Port Elizabeth Mainline Railway in South Africa. Confined to a wheelchair, he managed to train a baboon named Jack to operate the signal switches for him. The pair provided services for nine years until Jack’s death in 1890. Jack was paid 20 cents and half a bottle of beer per week.
