FACT OF THE DAY: Nuclear explosions create the nuclear isotopes strontium-90 and cesium-137, which do not occur naturally. After decades of nuclear bomb tests, these isotopes have permeated Earth’s atmosphere; as a result, all oil paintings created after 1945 have trace amounts of them in the paint. This has become a common test when detecting forged artwork.
