FACT OF THE DAY: The most abundant vertebrate animal in the world is the bristlemouth, a small deep-sea fish comprising 32 species that grow from one to 12 inches long. Scientists estimate the world population to be in the hundreds of trillions, or perhaps quadrillions, which could make bristlemouths more numerous than ants. By comparison, the most common bird—the chicken—numbers somewhere around 24 billion.
