FACT OF THE DAY: In 1992, vacuum cleaner company Hoover launched a promotion in the UK for two free round-trip plane tickets (valued up to £600) after a qualifying £100 purchase. Department stores were swamped with customers trying to redeem the deal, ten times as many as Hoover predicted, racking up £100 million in flight-coupon obligations. Hoover was unable to grant most of the promised tickets, permanently damaging its brand reputation. The company’s European market share dropped from over 50% to under 10% and the company was sold at a loss in late 1995.
