FACT OF THE DAY: When Andrew Waugh calculated the elevation of Mount Everest in 1852, he arrived at exactly 29,000 feet. Thinking such a round number wouldn’t be believed, he submitted an measurement of 29,002 feet. (The elevation is now recognized at 29,029 feet, although China and Nepal differ on whether the 12 feet of ice and snow atop the mountain should be counted.)
