FACT OF THE DAY: In 1999, food company Healthy Choice offered a promotion where customers could redeem 10 Healthy Choice bar codes for 1,000 frequent-flyer miles. California resident David Phillips realized that Healthy Choice pudding cups—retail price 25 cents—each carried a bar code, meaning he could earn 1,000 miles for about $1.50. Phillips proceeded to spend $3,000 buying 12,000 pudding cups, redeeming them for over 1.2 million miles. The event was fictionalized in the 2002 Adam Sandler film “Punch-Drunk Love.”
